In response to the concerns and questions that have been raised in relation to the closure of the PKL Infant, Toddler Childcare Center & Food Pantry in Oscoda, we are releasing the following statement:
DI is aware of the situation with one of its former members and shares in the disappointment that the community is understandably feeling due to the permanent closure of the PKL Infant & Toddler Childcare Center & Food Pantry in Oscoda.
In August of 2024, the founder of PKL Cares Food Pantry, Pam Loveless, was presented with a $250,000 check on Aug. 9, from the Consumers Energy Foundation. DI did assist Loveless in the application process for that specific grant as each DI member is entitled to up to 20 hours of grant writing assistance and education.
The role of DI in the grant writing process is to help organizations develop a grant proposal, give advice, as well as help seek out grant opportunities that fit the member’s needs. It is the responsibility of the submitting organization to provide truthful and current information in the grant proposal as well as their responsibility to submit the proposal to the granting agency. After the grant is submitted the relationship is strictly between the member that is applying for the grant and the granting organization. DI is not involved with reporting or the execution of any grants awarded to our membership unless a prior agreement for DI to be a fiduciary is made. Currently DI only has a fiduciary agreement with Child Care Back Office, its separate nonprofit childcare initiative.
DI also does not grant money to members. The $50,000 grant writing grant that was awarded to Develop Iosco from the Office of Rural Prosperty is for providing grant writing assistance and education through the hiring of a grant writer. Nonprofits must operate under state and national guidelines including financial disclosure of philanthropic dollars. As DI assists its membership through its grant writing services, we remind other boards and CEOs to take their fiduciary responsibility seriously and ensure consistent communication with its donors and the community at large about how funds are spent.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please send an email to contact@develop-iosco.org
We host grant workshops periodically.
There are none scheduled at this time.
Stay tuned for more information.
The Office of Rural Prosperity (ORP) grant in 2024 enabled DI to hire Dr. Manuela Kress of Mid-Michigan Grant Writers . DI was recently awarded the same grant for 2025-2026.
When more people know how to successfully write for grants, more dollars come into Iosco County, more solutions are found and more dreams come true. DI is committed to grant education.
